Thabo Cele to Mamelodi Sundowns? Brazilians In Advanced Talks After Chiefs Exit

Thabo Cele at Kaiser Chiefs

Mamelodi Sundowns are in advanced stages to sign free agent midfielder Thabo Cele, according to *SABC Sport*.

The 29-year-old recently parted ways with Kaizer Chiefs via mutual agreement, just 18 months after joining from Russian side Fakel Voronezh.

Why Sundowns Want Cele

Masandawana are looking to add an experienced midfielder following the tragic passing of Jayden Adams shortly after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and the departure of players like Miguel Reisinho.

Sundowns need more depth in the engine room as they prepare for a demanding domestic and CAF Champions League campaign.

Chiefs Exit Explained

Cele's time at Naturena came to an abrupt end after new coach Fernando Da Cruz made it clear that he was not in his plans for the new season.

As a result, the KwaMashu-born midfielder missed Chiefs' pre-season tour to Spain and spent several weeks training away from the first team before his contract was terminated on Monday night.

He made 36 appearances across all competitions last season.

What Next?

According to SABC Sport, talks between Cele and the African champions have reached an advanced stage, with personal terms being finalised.

If completed, Cele would become the latest free agent to join Chloorkop after former Orlando Pirates right-back Deano Van Rooyen.

The Brazilians are yet to officially comment on the deal.
