Does Showboating Win Trophies? The Cost of Flair in South African Football Since The 1950s

Image
Kasi flavour Thabo Rakhale From the dusty township grounds of the 1950s, eKasi to the modern Betway Premiership, one thing has defined South African football: flair. The tsamaya, the shibobo, the showboating. It is in our DNA. It brings fans to their feet and makes local football unique. But after more than 70 years of flair, a hard question must be asked: What are the actual benefits of showboating beyond harassing opponents and losing in major tournaments? The Real Benefits Of Showboating To be fair, showboating does have value when used correctly: 1. Fan Entertainment:  It is what fills stadiums. A well-executed shibobo is what fans pay to see. 2. Psychological Edge : It can boost a player's confidence and intimidate a defender. 3. Player Branding:  Flair players get noticed. It helps young players attract scouts and build a name quickly. The Other Side: When Flair Becomes A Flaw The problem begins when flair is used without end product. At international level, where effici...

He Came As An Interpreter!" - Dan Malesela Slams Cedric Kaze's Kaizer Chiefs Coaching Role

Image
Cedric Kaze Coach of Kaizer Chiefs  Outspoken coach Dan Malesela has launched a scathing attack on former Sekhukhune and Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze, questioning how he went from being an interpreter to a head coach in the PSL. Speaking on KickOff, Malesela did not hold back: "This guy came here as an interpreter, not as a coach; all of a sudden he finds himself being made co-head coach of Kaizer Chiefs for a season, and after Chiefs he is no longer an interpreter and is now a coach," Malesela said. "As a country, we are doing an injustice to ourselves. An interpreter can't all of a sudden be a head coach just because he was asked to hold the coaching reins just for a season at Kaizer Chiefs." Malesela's comments come after Sekhukhune departure after 5 games being in charge as head coach  WHO IS CEDRIC KAZE? - FACT CHECK Contrary to the "interpreter" tag, Cedric Kaze's profile shows extensive coaching experience: - FC Barcelona Academy* ...

Image
Thabo Cele at Kaiser Chiefs  Mamelodi Sundowns are in advanced stages to sign free agent midfielder Thabo Cele, according to *SABC Sport*. The 29-year-old recently parted ways with Kaizer Chiefs via mutual agreement, just 18 months after joining from Russian side Fakel Voronezh. Why Sundowns Want Cele Masandawana are looking to add an experienced midfielder following the tragic passing of Jayden Adams shortly after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and the departure of players like Miguel Reisinho. Sundowns need more depth in the engine room as they prepare for a demanding domestic and CAF Champions League campaign. Chiefs Exit Explained Cele's time at Naturena came to an abrupt end after new coach Fernando Da Cruz made it clear that he was not in his plans for the new season. As a result, the KwaMashu-born midfielder missed Chiefs' pre-season tour to Spain and spent several weeks training away from the first team before his contract was terminated on Monday night. He made 36 appearance...

Maseko becomes the latest South African to test himself in Europe, joining a club that regularly competes in the UEFA Champions League and is backed by another SA star, Elias "Zuma" Achouri. Svensson: "Explosive Player In 1-on-1 Situations" Copenhagen boss Bo Svensson is clearly excited by what Maseko will bring to the Danish Superliga champions. “In Thapelo, we get an explosive, dynamic player with exceptional qualities in direct, 1-on-1 situations,” Svensson said. “His pace and ability to challenge his direct opponent will make him a constant threat in behind, but he can also use his left foot to assist teammates when cutting inside,” says Svensson.  “There are naturally still elements to refine, but Thapelo's potential is high, and he always work...
