SAFA dismisses reports of Hugo Broos’ exit from Bafana Bafana

The South African Football Association has dismissed reports from Belgium suggesting that Hugo Broos has stepped down as head coach of the South African senior men’s national team.

SAFA said the claims are false and confirmed that Broos remains in charge of Bafana Bafana. The association added that this is not the first time the Belgian coach has been linked with an exit soon after a major tournament success.

Broos was previously rumoured to be joining Tunisia in March 2024, weeks after Bafana Bafana won bronze at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. Similar speculation has now surfaced again following South Africa’s historic run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Bafana Bafana returned from the tournament a few days ago after making history in the global showpiece in the United States, Mexico and Canada. South Africa reached the second round for the first time ever after beating South Korea 1-0 in Monterrey in their final group match.

According to SAFA, Broos is currently at home in Belgium and is expected back in South Africa later this month.
