Manqoba Mngqithi explained the decision to join Young Africans

Manqoba Mngqithi has been confirmed as the new head coach of Young Africans, with the South African tactician saying his return to the CAF Champions League space was a major reason for taking the job.

Mngqithi said he was drawn to an ambitious club with a professional setup and the willingness to strengthen the squad in pursuit of success on the continental stage.

“I just wanted to be back into the Champions League space and see what can happen. And an ambitious club that is willing to try and bring some players to make sure that we can achieve our objectives,” Mngqithi told SABC

“Very professional setup that is very encouraging for me. And it’s something that I’ve always been looking forward to, to be back in the Champions League and see how far can I take the East of Africa in the Champions League,” he added.

The appointment brings a coach with proven CAF experience to one of Tanzania’s biggest clubs. Mngqithi has been involved in the CAF Champions League with Mamelodi Sundowns, including during the club’s 2016 title-winning campaign, and has also overseen recent continental matches in the competition

Young Africans, meanwhile, remain one of East Africa’s strongest clubs on the continental stage, with their biggest modern CAF achievement coming in 2023 when they reached the CAF Confederation Cup final  The Tanzanian giants have also been regular participants in the CAF Champions League, where their long match history reflects steady involvement at the top level of African club football .

Mngqithi’s arrival will raise expectations at Yanga as the club looks to build on its domestic success and make a deeper impact in CAF competitions
