Barker Vows To Learn From Simba’s Community Shield Defeat To Mngqithi’s Yanga

Simba SC head coach Steve Barker admitted it was a disappointing start to the season after his side fell 1-0 to rivals Young Africans in the Tanzanian Community Shield.

The defeat handed first silverware of the campaign to opposite number and fellow South African Manqoba Mngqithi, but Barker was quick to focus on the bigger picture.

"Very disappointing; it's not the result we wanted, but we take lessons from this, we learn, we grow, and we make sure that we improve in the areas that need improvement," Barker said after the match.

It was a tough day for the South African contingent at Simba, with Barker joined by former PSL players Neo Maema, Rushine De Reuck and Keletso Makgalwa all on the losing side in the Kariakoo derby.

Despite the setback, Simba will now turn attention to the league and CAF competitions, where Barker will be hoping to bounce back quickly and get the Tanzanian giants back to winning ways.

It was a mixed night for South Africans in Europe as three SA players featured in Tuesday’s (11/Aug/2026) UEFA Champions League qualifiers, with Relebohile Mofokeng bowing out with Union SG while Gift Links and Aden McCarthy were in action for AGF and Sabah respectively. Maseko Rejects Sundowns Offer: Cardoso Confirms Attacker Wants Exit

Miguel Cardoso says Thapelo Maseko has turned down the chance to rejoin the Mamelodi Sundowns squad, with the 22-year-old attacker now pushing for an exit. Speaking after Sundowns’ latest training, the CAF Champions League-winning coach confirmed that talks had taken place but Maseko made his intentions clear. “There are no personal issues between us,” Cardoso said. “We had positive discussions recently. But Thapelo has told us he wants to leave.” Cardoso: "I Don't Work With Unwilling Players" The Sundowns boss made it clear he won’t force the issue.  “I prefer not to work with players who don’t want to be here,” Cardoso added. “The door is open if he changes his mind and wants to stay and fight. But right now, the decision is with the club.” Maseko, 22, has been linked with a move away after struggling for regular game time at Chloorkop. Mamelodi Sundowns have turned down initial offers for Thapelo Maseko amid claims the Bafana Bafana winger is unhappy and training away from the main squad, _Goal South Africa_ reports.
