Former Stellenbosch coach Barker explains Simba SC move: "I wanted to challenge myself at a big team on the continent"

New Simba SC head coach Steve Barker has revealed the reason behind his decision to leave Stellenbosch FC, saying the chance to compete for major honours in Africa was too good to turn down.

Barker ended his long and successful spell at Stellies to take charge of the Tanzanian giants, and he says the timing of the offer played a big role.

Speaking to _FARPost_, Barker said: "I was in my final year of my contract and when it was time to extend it, it took a while until December and then Simba SC called and I saw as a good opportunity to go to a team which challenges leagues titles, cups and is a big team in the continent (Africa) then I saw it a chance for me to challenge myself and try my best".

The 56-year-old spent over 5-years at Stellenbosch, guiding them from the GladAfrica Championship to regular CAF competition and a top 4 finish in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

With his contract at the Cape Winelands club running down, Barker admitted the delay in extension talks opened the door for Simba.

Simba SC are 21-time Tanzanian Premier League champions and regulars in the CAF Champions League. The Msimbazi Reds are expected to mount another title challenge this season under Barker’s leadership.

Barker becomes add to South African coaches to test himself abroad, following in the footsteps of Pitso Mosimane and Rulani Mokwena, Fadlu Davids etc

Orlando Pirates have suffered a major setback with striker Evidence Makgopa ruled out for the next two months due to a knee injury.
