Puso Dithejane

South Africans Puso Dithejane and Olwethu Makhanya were standout performers for their clubs this week, with both playing full matches and making big impacts.

Dithejane scored a brace for Chicago Fire in a 2-1 win over Cruz Azul to send them through to the next round of the competition. The forward played the full 90 minutes and was key to Fire’s victory, bagging both goals to secure all three points.

Speaking after the match, Dithejane said: “We are very happy to progress to the next round of the competition. It gives us confidence heading into our next match.”

The Chicago Fire head coach praised the youngster: “Puso’s progress is remarkable and we hope he continues. He is a bright kid & we’re all happy for him. We believe he can score more goals for the team.”

Meanwhile in Europe, Makhanya also went the distance. The defender played the full 90 minutes for Rangers FC in the UEFA Europa League as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Jagiellonia Bialystok. It was a dream come true for Makhanya to feature in a UEFA competition.

It was a proud week for South African football with two players featuring prominently at club level in the USA and Europe.
