Mamelodi Sundowns have reached an agreement with Polokwane City for the signing of right-back Thabang Matuludi,
The 27-year-old Bafana Bafana defender has reportedly penned a three-year deal and will undergo a medical at Chloorkop in the coming days ahead of an official announcement.
With Sundowns competing on multiple fronts, the signing comes at a crucial time for Miguel Cardoso. Here are 3 key reasons why Masandawana need Matuludi:
1. Khuliso Mudau Injury Crisis
First-choice right-back Khuliso Mudau is set to miss almost the entire season through injury. This has left a massive hole in defence, forcing Cardoso to improvise.
2. Lack Of Depth And Fitness Issues
Backup Zuko Mdunyelwa is not fully fit, while Thapelo Morena is often pushed forward as a winger for his attacking qualities. Deano van Rooyen was signed as a free agent is not fully fit as he was not playing at Orlando Pirates, but Sundowns still need a natural, defensively solid right-back.
3. Experience And Fixture Congestion*
Matuludi brings valuable Bafana Bafana experience and PSL consistency. Sundowns will fight for the Betway Premiership, domestic cups, the CAF Champions League, CAF Super Cup and the FIFA International Cup - they need two quality players in every position.
The deal is expected to be concluded this week.
